Danner Mountain 600 Hiking Boots Review (Women’s)

I won’t lie – the first thing that drew me to the Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots was how cute they are. Most hiking boots are (in my humble, socks-with-sandals wearing opinion) kind of ugly. So when I saw the Danner boots, I was intrigued – and like you (I assume, since you’re reading this), I had some doubts about whether the boots would measure up in quality.

So, spoiler alert, they do! But this Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots review will go more in depth about the boots, to help you decide if they’re right for you.

My Experience With Danner Boots

Before I get into the Danner Mountain 600 review, it’s important that you know where I’m coming from! 

I’ve only had one pair of Danners, and I bought them in July of 2019, so I’ve been wearing them for over two years. There are several variations of the Mountain 600 hiking boots, but the ones I have is this pair – they’re the simplest (cheapest) option. I wear women’s shoes, so I can’t speak to the men’s version of these – but from what I’ve read they’re really similar.

I usually only wear my Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots on hikes – I don’t wear them for anything else. I’d say I hike more than the average person, but I don’t do crazy long backpacking trips, so my boots have gotten a good amount of use the past few years – I hike more in the summer, and usually like hikes in the 7 – 10 mile range.

Are the Danner Mountain 600 Boots Comfortable?

The most important thing in a hiking boot – comfort. I was actually really, genuinely surprised with how comfortable the Danner 600 Mountain boots are. I’m the type of person who wears Chaco sandals everywhere because I don’t like closed toes (I used to exclusively hike in them but then I started twisting my ankles concerningly often and invested in boots), but with the Danner Mountain 600 boots, I don’t even get that “I need to take these off right now immediately” feeling after a hike. I’ve had several pairs of hiking boots throughout my life, and the Danner boots are the most comfortable I’ve ever tried!

I didn’t feel like they needed to be broken in – the first time I wore them was on a 6 mile hike, and I felt totally fine. I will say that my pinky toes felt like they were a little raw, but that happens to me pretty often with new shoes (I think my toes are shaped weird if we’re being honest), but it wasn’t anything painful or significant. After the first time, it hasn’t happened again.

Danner Mountain 600 Hiking Boots Sizing & Fit

I typically wear a women’s size 8. When I bought my Danner 600 hiking boots, the description said that the company recommends going down half a size. The reviews about sizing were somewhat mixed, but I tend to wear thick socks on hikes and usually prefer more room. I decided to stick with my regular size, and the women’s 8 fits me perfectly – no regrets with my decision to get my normal size.

I wear the “normal” width shoes, but there is also an option for wide soles! Unfortunately, they only have this for men’s sizes, which is a big con of the Danner boots.

Are Danner Mountain 600 Hiking Boots Waterproof?

According to Backcountry’s description, Danner boots are designed to hold up to the weather and terrain of the Pacific Northwest. The boots are waterproof!

And they do hold up to those claims. I do most of my hikes in the Pacific Northwest – which is known for rain and mud. While I’ve never submerged my Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots, I’ve done plenty of shallow stream crossings, rainy day hikes, and snowy trails. The boots are definitely waterproof, but they’re still breathable.

If they get really wet, the outside does take a little while to dry – but, my feet have never gotten wet!

Danner Mountain 600 Hiking Boots Traction

A huge thing to consider when buying hiking boots is the traction. You don’t want to be slipping and sliding on steep hiking trails or wet terrain! 

The Danner Mountain 600 Hiking Boots were designed for the wet weather in the PNW, so they have really good traction. I’ve done a lot of muddy hikes, and haven’t had any issues. The Vibram soles are grippy, and I haven’t fallen on my butt yet!

Are Danner Mountain 600 Boots Good in Cold Weather?

Honestly, I don’t do very many cold weather hikes – occasionally I hike in the snow, but for the most part this isn’t too much of a concern for me. But, I would say the Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots are decent in cold weather – there are other Danner boots (like the Mountain Pass) that are heavier, thicker, and warmer, but the Mountain 600s are perfectly fine for me.

Are Danner Mountain 600 Boots Good in Hot Weather?

Because the Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots are pretty lightweight, they’re great for hot weather. They’re really breathable, and I’ve been pretty happy to find that my feet don’t feel too hot when I hike!

Are Danner Boots Durable?

I’ve had my Danner boots for a little over 2 years – and I’ve worn them for many miles of hiking trails. So far, they’re holding up really well! I don’t have any complaints with wear and tear – aside from some cosmetic scuffs they’re pretty much good as new (after a cleaning).

Aside from my personal experience, Danner started out making work boots, so they’ve always been about making durable, sturdy shoes. They have a good reputation, and the company even offers “boot recrafting” – if after a few years your boots need some love, they can often fix them up so you don’t have to buy new hiking boots. It’s more budget friendly, and better for the environment!

Are Danner Boots Worth the Cost?

While some of the other Danner boots are pricey, the Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots cost $189.95 on Backcountry. This is pretty standard for a quality pair of hiking boots.

As you can see, I actually had a hard time coming up with any cons! I love my Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots to death, and I plan to wear them forever. I get so many compliments on them, and they’re definitely the most comfortable hiking boots I’ve ever tried. I recommend them to everyone!
